Vision defines who we are. We are a people who exist to see a different future. Our mission describes what we do so that our vision becomes reality. And values determine how we do what we do. At North Church, we have six values: proclamation, prayer, participation, peace, partnership and purpose.
Prayer. We believe that prayer changes everything and especially us. Jesus gave his disciples a model prayer. He didn’t intend for it to be a mindless prayer repeated over and over again religiously. Instead, Jesus gave his disciples a pattern of intimate conversation to be shared with their Father God.
Jesus said to pray like this,
“Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name.
Your kingdom come,
your will be done,
Give us this day our daily bread,
and forgive us our debts,
And lead us not into temptation,
on earth as it is in heaven.
as we also have forgiven our debtors.
but deliver us from evil.”
This prayer begins powerfully. God is a Father to us! We are to come to Him as the One who cares for us. God hears us and helps us. We remind ourselves of Who He is to us. Then, we share our requests.
We pray for our Father’s name to be respected. Nothing is more important to us or to Him. Our lives are for Him and we want all people everywhere to know of His greatness.
We long for God’s Kingdom to advance on earth so we let Him know. We want the things that happen here where we live to be the way He wants them to be. We have real physical needs. And since He is able to meet them, we let Him know what we will need for the day in front of us.
We are sinners living among sinners. This means we will need to be forgiven and forgiving. The Father alone can do this for us. So we boldly ask Him to do so.We are also sinners who want to stop sinning. Because God loves us, we want to obey Him. So we ask Him to move us out of the path of sin and down the road of obeying Him in everything we are and do.
God is independent. He does as He pleases. And He is pleased to work out what He wants to do through the prayers of His people. Prayer changes everything. It brings our lives and our world in conformity with God’s good plan. Prayer especially changes us. Our independent streak is curbed. And through prayer, we find our place in God’s story rather than uselessly trying to cram Him into ours.
At North Church, we pray privately and publicly. We pray in our beds, in the shower, in our homes, in our cars, at work and everywhere else we go. We also pray together in Community Groups and in Sunday Gatherings. The more we pray the more passionate we become for God’s fame to spread to everyone everywhere. Which, in turn, leads us to even more prayer.
