Goals for Gospel Communities in 2017
As a church our Vision is to see Jesus preeminent in all of life. Our mission (the means by which we accomplish that vision) is to grow together and go together to make disciples. The hope is that, as followers of Jesus, this growth happens all over, all the time. However, at North one of the main vein through which this happens is through Gospel Communities. Gospel Communities (GCs) are aptly named as they are where we have opportunity to continually point each other to Jesus and the power and freedom of His Gospel.
Gospel Communities meet across the city in living rooms, pubs, restaurants, backyards, coffee shops…pretty much anywhere life happens. The idea is that we as a church set aside time in our crazy lives to refocus and connect with Jesus together as the church in small communities. As Pastor Bob likes to put it, this is the “life blood” of our church. It is where and how we as a body function as the church in our city.
In 2017, the elders and I are committed to the health and growth of our Gospel Communities. Our plan is simply stated but weighty and slow in its pursuit. Our aim for this year is “Healthy Leaders - Healthy Groups”. It really is that simple and difficult.
Jesus has given us all gifts and strengths which are a blessing to us in daily life. However, those gifts are not for us alone. As we see in verses like 1 Cor 12:4-7 and Eph 4:11-16 (go ahead look them up) we as God’s people are blessed, but those blessings are not only intended to reside with us, they are a gift to the church and through the church to our city. Jesus blesses us that we may be a blessing.
Pastor Bob and I are committed this year to invest in the lives of our GC leaders to ensure they are healthy and equipped to invest in the lives of the people who are in their groups. I have heard it said that we minister to each other through the overflow, the idea being that Jesus does not merely meet our needs but exceeds them. So, this year Pastor Bob and I are committed to being ministered to by Jesus that we may minister to our leaders that they may minister to those in their groups - that Jesus may be glorified and our church and city may be loved.
This is not something that is quickly accomplished. It will take time, but that is what we hope to see this year. If you are not yet in a GC I encourage you to jump into one and join us as we seek faithfulness to Jesus together. You can fill out a Connect Card here or stop by our Connect Desk on a Sunday.
And he gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ, so that we may no longer be children, tossed to and fro by the waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by human cunning, by craftiness in deceitful schemes. Rather, speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ, from whom the whole body, joined and held together by every joint with which it is equipped, when each part is working properly, makes the body grow so that it builds itself up in love. (Ephesians 4:11-16 ESV)
