A Prayer For Everyday Parents
Give them Grace, Dazzling Your Kids with the Love of Jesus has been a huge and immediate answer to a desperate prayer. One day, not very long ago, I had packed my kids off to nap in a hail of angry yelling about disobedience and lack of kindness toward each other. I screamed at them to stop screaming at each other. I had officially lost my mind, again. I was lying on the floor, sobbing and begging Jesus to help me not hate my kids. My heart was breaking with failure.
I am supposed to be a “mom on the mission field” always “preaching the gospel to little ears”. I can barely keep up with the dishes so finding time to ground myself in Jesus seems impossible. I can barely be heard over the bickering so when, exactly, am I going to find quiet moments to speak truth into little hearts? I am overwhelmingly tired so can’t the bible lesson just wait until tomorrow?
This book isn't 15 tips for well-mannered children and it isn’t an instruction manual for disciplining one's children by lavishing them with permissiveness and hoping for the best. It is a book designed specifically to take families who are drowning in the "everyday" while trying to do all the right things and drench them in Jesus.
Elyse Fitzpatrick and Jessica Thompson infuse the parent-child relationship with such a clear understanding of the gospel that my kids constantly show Jesus to me. When someone throws a fit over a disappointment, Jesus is there whispering into my heart, “That is you, all the time, in your sin and I died for you anyway”. Now, when little fists hit, I am constantly reminded of how much I sin in anger and how grateful I am to be able to run to the cross for salvation.
In that desperate gratitude and relief, it becomes second nature to take the kids along with me to the Savior. Yes, of course, I discipline them. Yes, of course, there are consequences. But, when Jesus drives me to ask myself if the motivation for correction truly reflects a belief in my own status as a previously-wretched-tantrum-throwing-adoptee who has been lovingly washed in His blood then all that discipline and all those consequences are delivered with the only thing that can really change our hearts…the love of Jesus.
